Changing components

Exel offers most of the components as spare parts. The components are glued with hot melt glue (except AT Tip, Suspension tip and Aero2 tip), which will soften in high temperature. When changing components, be careful with the hot water and hot glue to avoid any injuries.

Grips
  1. Remove the strap from the grip first.
Heat approx two liters of water until it boils. You can also use hot tap water, but it may not be hot enough. Put the poles with old grips in hot water for approximately 5 minutes. The glue will melt during this time. Since the water temperature is extremely hot, we strongly recommend using gloves to protect your hands from burns. Remove the pole from the water and pull off the hot grip. If the grip is too difficult to pull off, we suggest having a friend pull on the basket end of the pole. NOTE: Do not attempt to twist the grip off the pole because it could harm the shaft.
  2. After you have removed the old grips, keep the pole ends in hot water to keep them hot before assembling the new grips. Heat the hot melt glue with hot air blower or cooker until the glue is fully melt. Always wear gloves when handling the hot glue. Since hot glue causes a smoky smell, it is important to have proper air ventilation when melting the glue. Apply the melt glue on the shaft outer surface. Assemble the new grip on the shaft immediately after you have applied the glue. When assembling the grip, check carefully that the grip is aligned with the basket.
Baskets (glued)
  1. For changing the baskets please follow the steps mentioned in Grip changing.
  2. Baskets with Lock System
Exel has several baskets with the lock system mechanism: AT tip, Aero2 tip and Suspension tip. To remove the basket with lock mechanism, open the snap-fit of the basket with a screw driver (Picture) and press out the basket with your thumb simultaneously. This needs some practice, but is not complicated after you have done it a couple of times. Sometimes the basket is very tight because there is probably a lot of dust and fine sand between the basket and the ferrule. It is suggested that you run the basket under warm water to clear away any residual dirt before you attempt to remove the basket. If the basket is very tight, you can ask your friend to hold the shaft while you use the screw driver to open the snap-fit and pull out the basket. You can put on the new basket by just pressing it on the ferrule.
